El Caballo Rojo
Family restaurant facing the Mezquita in Córdoba, founded by Pepe García Marín in 1962 and in its current house since 1971, known for reviving Mozarabic dishes such as lamb with honey.
About El Caballo Rojo
José García Marín, 'Pepe el del Caballo Rojo', started in his parents' tavern at fifteen and turned his own taberna in San Cayetano into an eating house. In 1962 he moved to a house in the Judería between Calle Deanes and Calle Romero, and at the end of 1971 to this building facing the Mezquita, with 300 seats and the slogan 'Para comer: Córdoba'. He studied the old recipes of the city's Arab, Jewish and Christian kitchens. His granddaughter María Escribano has owned it since November 2022.
The Mozarabic dishes are the reason to book: suckling lamb shoulder with honey, rape mozárabe (monkfish), bacalao a la canela (cod with cinnamon) and alcachofas a la montillana (artichokes in Montilla wine). Cordoban classics include salmorejo, aubergines with cane honey, croquetas of puchero, ensalada sefardí and rabo de toro, with Montilla-Moriles wines.
It opens daily 13:00-16:00 and 20:00-00:00, closing on 24 December. On the last published menu starters cost €12-15 and mains €20-34; allow €40-55 per person with wine. Book online or by phone and ask for an upper-floor table; the tapas area and patio terrace are cheaper.
Weekday lunches are quieter than weekend dinners, when groups fill the rooms. Order the honey lamb, and artichokes in winter and spring. The pot-lined patio terrace is pleasant on May evenings during the Patios festival.
