About La Cala Golf

La Cala Golf is the golf side of La Cala Resort, in the hills of the Mijas municipality about 6 km inland from the coastal village of La Cala de Mijas. Opened in 1989, the resort has three full-length courses, all designed by Cabell B. Robinson, plus an academy, a short course and a four-star hotel looking towards the Sierra de Mijas.

The courses are named after continents. Campo América is a par 72 of 6,009 metres with five par 5s; Campo Asia is a par 72 of 5,925 metres; and Campo Europa is a par 71 of 6,014 metres. The terrain is genuinely hilly: on América the fairways are wide, but drives often have to carry steep, scrub-covered slopes, and the small, raised greens demand precise club selection. The views reach across the Sierra de Ojén to the Mediterranean, and a buggy is advisable.

The Golf Hub academy sits beside a redesigned nine-hole par-3 course, with a driving range, putting and chipping areas, club fitting, PGA coaching and junior and adult golf schools. The resort also has a spa, gym, racquet club and several restaurants.

October to May gives the best conditions. In summer, book the earliest tee time, since the inland valleys heat up quickly by midday.

Nearby places to visit

The valley around La Cala has several more courses. Closest is Santana Golf (3 km), on the road north of La Cala de Mijas, followed by Calanova Golf Club (3 km) on the slopes nearer the coast. La Siesta Golf (5 km) and Miraflores Golf (5 km) lie down near the coast around Calahonda and Riviera del Sol; Miraflores also has a Toptracer practice range. With three courses on site, La Cala works well as a base, and these neighbours add variety for a week of golf.
