About Villanueva Golf & Croquet
Villanueva Golf & Croquet is an 18-hole course on the edge of Puerto Real, on the inner shore of the Bay of Cádiz and about ten minutes by road from Cádiz city. Designed by Aymerich Consulting and opened in 2006, it plays to par 71, with wide fairways and a layout planned for walking.
Water defines the round. Lakes and artificial channels come into play on half the holes: the 5th, which the club calls the most spectacular and demanding on the course, has a lake down the right and a channel crossing it; the 9th is a risk-and-reward hole wrapped around three lakes; and the 14th skirts the large central lake. Pot bunkers dot the fairways, and lines of olives and big pines survive from the original estate.
As the name suggests, croquet is taken seriously too, with an official croquet court and a training court. There is also a driving range, approach, chipping and putting areas, a golf school run by Spanish professional Sebastián de Miguel, and a café-restaurant.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In July and August play first thing in the morning, before the heat builds; from October to May, the walkable layout makes a late-afternoon round a pleasant option.
