Chiclana Museum
The Museo de Chiclana, in the Casa Briones on the Plaza Mayor of Chiclana de la Frontera, tells the town's history; its 19th-century room covers the spa years.
About Chiclana Museum
The Museo de Chiclana is the town museum of Chiclana de la Frontera, on the Plaza Mayor in the old centre, inland from the beaches. It opened on 28 July 2010 in the Casa Briones and is devoted to the history and memory of the town.
The permanent exhibition runs from the first human settlements to the present day, room by room. The 19th-century room is the most distinctive. It covers Chiclana's rise as a spa resort around the Fuenteamarga and Brake springs, and two local figures who made their names in 1836: the matador Francisco Montes 'Paquiro', author of the Tauromaquia completa, and the playwright Antonio García Gutiérrez, whose drama El Trovador later inspired Verdi's opera. Another room covers popular traditions and festivals, and the museum has staged more than 60 temporary exhibitions, adding pieces to the permanent collection along the way.
Check current opening hours before you go, as they are not widely published.
Any season works, but it is best saved for the hottest summer hours, late morning or early afternoon, or for a day of strong levante wind, when the open Atlantic beaches nearby are at their least comfortable.

The coast lies just south-west of the town. Playa de la Barrosa (6 km) is Chiclana's main beach, a long Blue Flag strand facing the Atlantic sunsets, and Golf La Estancia (6 km) offers golf nearby. At Playa de Sancti Petri (7 km), the beach looks out to the islet of Sancti Petri and its castle. Across the channel in San Fernando, Punta del Boquerón y Playa del Castillo (7 km) is a 3 km strand beyond Camposoto that ends at the point facing the castle island. It is reached via San Fernando, not from Chiclana.
