Mijas
A white mountain village looking down on the Costa del Sol, with beaches, golf courses and walks in the Sierra de Mijas.
Why visit Mijas
Mijas is two places in one: Mijas Pueblo, a whitewashed village on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas with sweeping views over the coast, and Mijas Costa, a long stretch of beaches and resorts including La Cala. The village keeps the feel of a traditional pueblo blanco despite being minutes from the beach, and it is one of the easiest white villages to reach from the coast. Mijas suits families, golfers and anyone wanting a taste of village Andalucía without a long drive.
What to see and do in Mijas
In Mijas Pueblo, visit the Virgen de la Peña chapel carved into the rock, with a viewpoint over the coast, walk the gardens along the old walls and see the unusual square-sided bullring. The village has small museums and craft shops along its lanes. Above it, the Sierra de Mijas offers marked walks and mountain-bike trails with views to Africa on clear days. Mijas Costa has beaches at La Cala, Calahonda and Calaburra. It is one of the best golf areas in Spain, with courses including La Cala, Mijas Golf, Calanova, Chaparral, Cerrado del Águila, La Noria, Miraflores and Santana, as well as the iGolf practice centre and a disc-golf park. Families have the AquaMijas water park, and small-group tours of Andalucía stop here on the way inland.
A day in Mijas
Explore Mijas Pueblo in the morning, from the Virgen de la Peña chapel to the bullring and the gardens along the walls. Have lunch with a view, then head down to La Cala beach for the afternoon or play a round of golf. Hike the Sierra de Mijas trails in the early evening.
Food and local life
Look for traditional bars in the village serving tapas, migas and lamb, and fresh fish in the beach restaurants of La Cala. Local almonds, honey and sweet wines from the Axarquía make good souvenirs.
