Playa de Urrutia

Playa de Urrutia is part of the 2.5 km Atlantic strand on the Cádiz–San Fernando isthmus, between Torregorda and Camposoto, with ocean on one side and salt marshes behind.

About Playa de Urrutia

Playa de Urrutia is part of the long Atlantic strand on the narrow isthmus between Cádiz and San Fernando, on the stretch between Torregorda and Camposoto. Spain's official tourism portal gives Urrutia as another name for the El Chato and La Anegada beach south of Cortadura: golden sand about 2.5 km long and 40 metres wide.

The setting makes it distinctive. The open ocean is on one side, and behind the sand and the Cádiz–San Fernando motorway lie the salt marshes of the bay. With little building beyond scattered installations, it feels far more open than the city beaches further north.

Facilities are basic: toilets, litter bins and regular cleaning, plus a sports area and a designated surf zone. The beach is exposed and often windy, which suits surfers better than anyone hoping for calm water. It is easy to reach on foot or by car.

Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times, with warm sun and less pressure on parking than in high summer. Check the forecast first, as this coast is exposed to both the Levante and Poniente winds. Late afternoon is the best time of day, when the sun sets over the Atlantic directly in front of the beach.

Nearby places to visit

Heading south, Playa de Camposoto (2 km) is San Fernando's main ocean beach, running down to Punta del Boquerón and the ruined Urrutia battery inside the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. Back towards the city, Playa de Torregorda (2 km) and Playa de El Chato (4 km) continue the strand along the isthmus. Playa de la Casería (5 km), on San Fernando's bay shore, faces the sheltered water of the bay rather than the open Atlantic. In town, the Camarón Museum (5 km) honours the flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla, San Fernando's most famous son, a good stop when the wind makes the beach uncomfortable.
