Acuario de Almuñécar

Acuario de Almuñécar is a municipal aquarium of Mediterranean sea life beneath Plaza Kuwait in Almuñécar, Granada, with 18 tanks and a 17-metre glass tunnel through a shark oceanarium.

About Acuario de Almuñécar

The aquarium lies underground beneath Plaza Kuwait in central Almuñécar, a few hundred metres from Playa Puerta del Mar. Opened in 2008, it shut in November 2021 because of leaking tanks and reopened on 29 December 2025 after council repairs. It is Granada province's only aquarium and focuses on the sea life of the Almuñécar and La Herradura coast.

More than 1,500 animals of over 100 species live in 18 tanks: jellyfish, octopus, seahorses, morays, conger eels, spider crabs and shoals of sea bream and bass. The highlight is a one-million-litre oceanarium crossed by a 17-metre glass tunnel, with sand tiger sharks and rays overhead. A mural by El Niño de las Pinturas covers the lobby.

It opens 10:30–14:00 and again in the afternoon, from 16:30, 17:30 or 18:30 depending on the season, until 20:00–22:00; it is closed on Tuesdays. In 2026 adults pay €12 and children and over-65s €9, with the youngest free. Allow about an hour. There is no café inside, but the municipal market next door has food stalls and a paid car park.

The midday break catches visitors out, so arrive by 12:30 or after the afternoon reopening. Summer evenings, when it stays open until 22:00, and windy or rainy days are good times to go. Phone ahead (958 882 735), as times have changed since the reopening. The Loro Sexi bird garden, 600 m away, makes a short add-on.
