Mercado de Abastos de Linares

The Mercado de Abastos de Linares is a red-brick Neo-Mudéjar market hall at the end of Calle Santiago, built in 1903–1906 to designs by Francisco de Paula Casado y Gómez.

About Mercado de Abastos de Linares

The Mercado de Abastos de Linares stands at the end of Calle Santiago in the town centre. Designed by the municipal architect Francisco de Paula Casado y Gómez and built in 1903–1906, it crowned public works begun in 1875, when lead mining was making Linares wealthy. The single-storey hall is historicist with Neo-Mudéjar touches: red brick on a stone plinth and glazed tiles along the cornice. It was restored in the 1980s and in 2014.

Meat and fish, its traditional trades, share the hall with fruit and vegetables, pickles and olives, sweets, flowers and a newer charcuterie, while several bar stalls serve drinks and tapas. The hall doubles as a gallery, with a metal relief by the painter Paco Baños from the Teatro Olympia and a 6-metre galvanised relief by the street artist Belin of a boy fishing for a tuna.

Stalls open Monday to Saturday mornings, roughly 09:00–14:00, and close on Sundays; hours are extended at busy times, until 19:30 in December 2025. It suits visitors spending a day in Linares or touring Baeza and Úbeda with a self-catering kitchen.

Saturday around midday is liveliest, when locals shop and stop for a drink, and some Saturdays bring a DJ or live music from 13:00. Come before 11:00 on weekdays for the best choice of fish, and look for local olives at the pickles counter.

The market is in the centre of Linares, a short walk from two museums honouring famous sons of the town: the Raphael Museum of Linares (400 m), devoted to the singer, and the Andrés Segovia Museum (600 m), dedicated to the classical guitarist. South of town, the excavated Iberian and Roman city of Cástulo (7 km) has a visitor centre, and the Castillo de Burgalimar (15 km) at Baños de la Encina is a 10th-century caliphal fortress. The Renaissance towns are within half an hour by car: Baeza Cathedral (19 km) and, in Úbeda, the Sacra Capilla del Salvador (26 km).
