Baeza Cathedral
Baeza Cathedral stands on the site of the town's main mosque and was rebuilt by Andrés de Vandelvira after a collapse in 1567, keeping Gothic doorways and a tower on a minaret base.
About Baeza Cathedral
Baeza was the first seat of the bishops of Jaén after Fernando III took the town in 1227, and the cathedral stands on the site of the main mosque. Gothic parts survive, including the Puerta del Perdón and the cloister arcades, but after a church begun in 1529 collapsed in 1567, Vandelvira designed the present interior. It is part of the World Heritage Site listed in 2003.
Inside are three Renaissance naves, chapels with grilles and the Gothic Capilla de las Ánimas. The cloister keeps Mudéjar chapels, and the museum shows choir books, vestments, an alabaster Pietà and a silver monstrance of 1700–1714. Outside, the Puerta de la Luna is a 13th-century Mudéjar arch, and the tower rises from an old minaret.
General admission is €7 with audio guide, tower and VR; a one-hour guided visit costs €10 and a combined ticket with Jaén Cathedral €16. Under-13s go free. Entry is free on Monday and Tuesday evenings (18:00–19:00 in winter, 18:30–19:30 in summer) without tower or cloister. Winter hours are Monday–Friday 10:00–14:30 and 16:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–19:00, Sunday 10:00–17:30. The tower is climbed by stairs.
Climb the tower late in the afternoon for the best light over the rooftops. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing, and summer Sundays close at 15:00. Dress respectfully, and in July and August visit early before the heat.
