Palacio de Jabalquinto
The Palacio de Jabalquinto in Baeza has one of Spain's finest Isabelline Gothic façades, built in the late 15th century for Juan Alfonso de Benavides, a cousin of Ferdinand the Catholic.
About Palacio de Jabalquinto
Juan Alfonso de Benavides Manrique, lord of Jabalquinto, built the palace at the end of the 15th century opposite the Romanesque church of Santa Cruz. Its façade, attributed to the royal architect Juan Guas, is a showpiece of the Isabelline late Gothic. A Renaissance courtyard was added around 1599–1600 and the staircase is Baroque. It is now the Antonio Machado campus of the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía.
Most visitors come for the façade, best seen from the small square in front, with its rows of diamond points, carved pine cones, pinnacles and family shields beneath a gallery. Inside, when open, are a two-storey arcaded courtyard on Corinthian columns and a domed Baroque staircase entered through a triumphal arch.
There is no charge, but as a working university building it usually opens only on weekday mornings, roughly 09:00–14:00, and access may be restricted during courses; check with the Baeza tourist office first. The façade can be seen at any time. Allow 15–30 minutes. It is a short walk downhill from the cathedral on sloping streets and suits all ages.
Morning light suits the façade, and weekday mornings give the best chance of seeing the courtyard. Combine it with the cathedral, then walk on to the Plaza del Pópulo and the old university where the poet Antonio Machado taught.
