Trevélez
Trevélez is a white village of three stepped barrios on the slopes of Mulhacén in the Alpujarra, its highest houses at about 1,600 metres, and the home of Jamón de Trevélez.
About Trevélez
Trevélez lies where the Río Trevélez meets the Río Chico, south-west of Mulhacén. The village is split into the Barrio Bajo, Medio and Alto, up to 190 metres apart in height; its highest house stands at about 1,610 metres, among the highest in Spain. It was resettled after the Moriscos were expelled. It joined Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España in 2023 and has about 700 residents.
Plaza Francisco Abellán in the Barrio Bajo is lined with ham shops. Calle Real climbs to a fountain-washhouse and the Plaza de la Iglesia, with the 18th-century church of San Benito. Higher up are the Ermita de San Antonio, the Fuente del Moreno on the old path to Mulhacén and the Era de la Cruz viewpoint. The Vallejo Ham Museum beside the church shows a working drying house; basic entry is free.
Granada is about 95 km away, 1 hour 45 minutes on mountain roads. Trevélez is the end of the Alsa bus line from Granada. Park in the Barrio Bajo; the climb to the Barrio Alto is steep and partly stepped, not suitable for wheelchairs. Allow half a day. Walkers can join the GR-7 and the Sulayr GR-240, or take the long day hike to the Siete Lagunas lakes below Mulhacén, for fit hikers only.
May–June and September–October are best; winters are cold and snowy. On 5 August villagers walk up Mulhacén for the Virgen de las Nieves. Ham is the obvious buy, and producers will slice and vacuum-pack it. Bring warm layers, as evenings are cool even in summer.

In the village itself, the Vallejo Ham Museum (0 km) beside the church explains how Jamón de Trevélez is salted and cured. West over the ridge are the three white villages of the Poqueira gorge: Capileira (10 km), Bubión (10 km) and Pampaneira (11 km), linked by a waymarked path; by road they are about 25 km away via Pórtugos and Pitres, where the iron-rich Fuente Agria spring is a classic stop. On the far, northern side of Sierra Nevada, the Renaissance Castillo de La Calahorra (27 km in a straight line) is a long drive round the mountains.
