Castillo de La Calahorra

Castillo de La Calahorra is a fortress-palace on a hill at the foot of Sierra Nevada, built in 1509–1512 around one of Spain's first Italian Renaissance courtyards, in Carrara marble.

About Castillo de La Calahorra

The castle crowns the only hill on the plain of the Marquesado del Zenete, about 1,250 metres up at the foot of Sierra Nevada. The Marquis of Zenete, Rodrigo de Mendoza, had it built in 1509–1512 over an earlier Moorish fort. Lorenzo Vázquez began the work and the Genoese Michele Carlone finished it, shipping carved Carrara marble from Italy. The Diputación de Granada bought it in 2025 and opened it that September. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Outside it is a plain block of reddish stone with four domed corner towers. Inside, a two-storey courtyard of marble arcades, balustrades and a grand staircase is one of the earliest Italian Renaissance spaces in Spain. Tours also show coffered ceilings and the old cells. It has appeared on screen from The Wind and the Lion to House of the Dragon.

Visits are by free guided tour only, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and must be booked online in advance. Cars cannot drive up: park in the village and walk up the steep Calle Joaquín Gisbert. On Friday mornings a free shuttle for less mobile visitors leaves the church square hourly from 10:00 to 13:00. Allow 1.5 hours. The site is not yet adapted and is not advised for severe reduced mobility or very young children.

Spring and autumn are best; winter mornings are cold at this height and summer sun is strong. Book weekends early.

To the south, the Puerto de la Ragua road crosses Sierra Nevada into the Alpujarra, where the Vallejo Ham Museum (27 km) in Trevélez celebrates the village's cured hams. Further north, the badlands of the Gorafe Desert (41 km) are dotted with prehistoric dolmens. Just 4 km away, Alquife was for centuries an iron-mining village.
