Guadix Cathedral

Guadix Cathedral, on the site of the old main mosque in the town centre, was begun in the 16th century and finished in exuberant Baroque in the 18th, with a bell tower visitors can climb.

About Guadix Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Incarnation stands in the centre of Guadix, about 60 km east of Granada, on the site of the town's main mosque. Pedro de Morales began a late Gothic church in the 1510s, Diego de Siloé redesigned it in 1549 and, after a long halt for lack of funds, Vicente Acero and Gaspar Cayón finished it in the 18th century with Baroque facades and tower. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The Baroque main front is a towering mass of columns and broken cornices. Inside are carved choir stalls, chapels, rooms with the cathedral's treasures and a light show projected onto a marble copy of Michelangelo's Pietà. A tower ticket adds spiral stairs to the bell-ringer's house and belfry, with views over the cave quarter.

Tickets cost €7 (reduced €6), €9 (€8) with the tower and €5 for the tower alone, sold online or at the door with no timed slot; guided tours (€12) run Friday at 16:00 and Saturday at 12:00 and 16:00. From October to March it opens Monday to Thursday 11:00–14:30 and 16:00–18:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00–19:00 and Sunday 15:00–18:00, last entry an hour before closing. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The nave is accessible; the tower stairs do not suit reduced mobility or small children.

Spring and autumn suit a day with the caves; climb the tower early in summer. No flash or video inside.

Nearby places to visit

Guadix's cave quarter, with hundreds of whitewashed chimneys, begins a short walk from the cathedral. The La Inmaculada Cave Museum (5 km) in neighbouring Purullena shows a furnished cave home, and Castillo de La Calahorra (15 km) rises from the plain below Sierra Nevada. North of town, the eroded canyons of the Gorafe Desert (29 km) hide dozens of prehistoric dolmens, while the Cueva de las Ventanas (30 km) at Píñar is a show cave with Neolithic remains. Guadix's own Alcazaba, a Moorish citadel, can be seen from outside just above the cathedral.
