Bubión

Bubión is the middle white village of the Barranco de Poqueira, at 1,300 metres in the Alpujarra, once head of the Nasrid taha of Poqueira and home to a traditional Alpujarra house museum.

About Bubión

Bubión sits at 1,300 metres between Pampaneira and Capileira in the Barranco de Poqueira. From the 13th century it was head of the Nasrid taha of Poqueira. In 1568 its people joined Aben Humeya's Morisco revolt; afterwards they were expelled and settlers came from Galicia, León and Castile. It is part of the Poqueira Conjunto Histórico, joined Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España in 2018 and has about 300 residents.

The church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Mudéjar in origin and rebuilt after the revolt and an earthquake in 1804, is the centrepiece. Beside it the Casa Alpujarreña museum shows a furnished village house with more than 500 objects. Look for the tinaos of Calle Trocadero, the old washhouse and the eras (threshing floors) below the village, which double as viewpoints.

Granada is about 73 km away, 1 hour 25 minutes by car. Alsa buses from Granada stop on the main road. Park on the A-4129 and walk down: the lower lanes are steep, stepped and cobbled, not suitable for wheelchairs. The museum costs €1.80 and opens 11:00–14:00 (closed Tuesday), plus 17:00–19:00 on Friday and Saturday. Allow two hours. It suits walkers wanting a quieter base.

Spring and autumn are best; winter can bring snow. San Sebastián is celebrated on the weekend nearest 20 January and a summer fiesta falls in late August. Try sopa alpujarreña and local cured ham. Do not judge Bubión from the road: its church, museum and best lanes lie below it.

Nearby places to visit

Bubión sits between its two Poqueira neighbours: Pampaneira (1 km) lies below and Capileira (1 km) above, and a waymarked path links all three in under two hours. Over the ridge to the east, Trevélez (10 km) climbs the slopes of Mulhacén, and its Vallejo Ham Museum (10 km) explains the curing of Trevélez ham. A path also drops from the village to the Río Poqueira, where the river forms small pools in summer. Towards Granada, Nigüelas (16 km) in the Valle de Lecrín has a medieval olive mill, and Los Cahorros de Monachil (26 km) is a gorge walk with hanging bridges.
