Jaén Cathedral

Jaén Cathedral is Andrés de Vandelvira's Renaissance masterpiece, built from about 1540 and completed in 1724, some 100 metres long with a 50-metre dome and a Baroque façade of 1667.

About Jaén Cathedral

The cathedral occupies the site of Jaén's main mosque, consecrated as a church after Fernando III took the city in 1246. Andrés de Vandelvira's building rose from about 1540, with work lasting until 1724; Eufrasio López de Rojas designed the Baroque west front in 1667. About 100 metres long, with a 50-metre dome, it has been on Spain's tentative World Heritage list since 2012.

The ticket covers the hall-church interior, the late Gothic choir with one of Spain's largest sets of stalls, Vandelvira's sacristy and chapter house, the upper galleries and the museum in the old canons' burial vaults. The Santo Rostro, a Veronica relic, is shown to the faithful on Fridays.

Tickets cost €10 (over-65s €9, ages 13–25 €8, under-12s free) with an audio guide and VR viewer, at the door or online, with no timed slots; Jaén and Baeza cathedrals together cost €16. Guided tours (€15) run on Fridays and Saturdays and must be booked. It opens Monday–Friday 10:00–13:30 and 16:30–18:30, Saturday 10:00–18:30 and Sunday 14:00–18:30. Allow an hour; the galleries involve stairs.

Photography is not allowed inside, and visitors should dress respectfully. Weekday mornings are quietest; last entry is 45 minutes before closing. For the classic view of the whole building, go up to the Castillo de Santa Catalina.
