Taberna El Hortelano, Jaén

Family tavern founded in 1957 in Jaén's San Ildefonso tapas quarter, once home to Diego Puerta's bullfighting club, known for violetes, Iberian charcuterie and a Repsol Solete.

About Taberna El Hortelano, Jaén

The tavern opened in 1957 at No. 33 on Calle Teodoro Calvache, then a road used by hortelanos (market gardeners) heading out to the fields, which gave it its name. In 1967 the bullfighting club of the matador Diego Puerta was founded here. Antonio Garrido started behind its tall marble bar in 1978; the tavern moved to No. 25 in 1999 and his son took over in 2019. Taberna El Hortelano received a Guía Repsol Solete in 2024.

The best-known dish is the violete, a pasty filled with minced meat and Iberian ham. Regulars also order tigres (stuffed mussels), croquetas, flamenquín, patatas alioli, callos con garbanzos (tripe with chickpeas), atún encebollado (tuna with onions) and fried cod or calamares. Migas are served from November to Palm Sunday. Cured meats include Iberian ham and Casa Sendra salchichón, with manzanilla and Spanish wines by the glass.

It opens Wednesday to Saturday 13:00-17:00 and 21:00-00:00, and closes Sunday to Tuesday. As in all Jaén taverns, drinks come with a tapa; raciones are reasonably priced and a full meal costs about €20-30 per person (2026, approximate). Booking is recommended for tables (609 64 48 11); the bar takes walk-ins.

Come on a Thursday or Friday evening when the street fills with people moving between taverns. Order violetes and a plate of ham first, then something from the stew list. In autumn and winter ask for migas and artichokes, and expect a summer closing period.
