Taberna La Manchega, Jaén
One of Jaén's two oldest taverns, open since 1886 in a lane behind the cathedral, where every drink brings a free tapa and the bocadillos are cut to order at the bar.
About Taberna La Manchega, Jaén
Taberna La Manchega opened in 1886 on Calle Bernardo López, one of the stepped lanes between the cathedral and the Arco del Consuelo, and with El Gorrión next door it is counted among the oldest taverns in Jaén. The date is on the sign over the door. Guides call it, with neighbouring Los Amigos, the archetypal Jaén tasca; below the bar is a basement dining room crowded with old objects.
As elsewhere in Jaén, each drink comes with a free tapa chosen by the staff or from the counter display: patatas rellenas (stuffed potatoes), carne con tomate, choricillos, sangre en salsa, migas (fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and peppers) or patatas alioli. The house speciality is the bocadillo, a filled roll of morcilla, chorizo, lomo de orza (pork loin preserved in oil) or ham. Iberian cured meats, revueltos (scrambled eggs) and local wines complete the menu.
It opens for lunch from about 12:00 to 16:00 and in the evening from about 20:30 to midnight, certainly from Thursday to Saturday; recent guides say it closes on Tuesdays, so check before going. A drink with its tapa costs about €2-3 and bocadillos a few euros (2026, approximate). Only basement tables can be booked; there is a weekday menú del día.
The lane fills on Friday and Saturday nights, so arrive soon after opening or come at weekday lunchtime. Have a drink and tapa, share a bocadillo and move on, as locals do. Migas are a winter favourite.
