Vía Verde del Aceite

Andalucía's longest greenway starts in Jaén city: 55 km of the old Jaén–Puente Genil 'oil train' line through olive groves to the Guadajoz viaduct, on a 127 km route with 13 iron viaducts.

About Vía Verde del Aceite

The Jaén–Puente Genil railway is now a 127.38 km greenway, the longest in Andalucía and the second longest in Spain, with 12 stations, four tunnels and 13 metal viaducts. Its asphalt and compacted-earth surface suits walkers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. The Jaén section runs about 55 km to the Guadajoz viaduct, then the route continues into Córdoba.

Km 0 is in Las Fuentezuelas, north-west Jaén. The trail climbs round the Sierra de la Grana below Jabalcuz to Torredelcampo station (km 11), then through the lit 333 m Caballico tunnel. After Torredonjimeno (km 15.6) it rises gently to its high point by the Peña de Martos and Martos station (km 23), then descends through olive groves to the 208 m Salado viaduct (km 34), the 224 m Víboras viaduct beside a medieval bridge (km 42), Alcaudete station (km 48.3) and the 200 m iron lattice over the Guadajoz (km 54.5).

The greenway is free and open all year; main roads are crossed by footbridges or underpasses. Shade is scarce, so carry 2–3 litres of water in summer and refill in Torredelcampo, Torredonjimeno and Martos. Alcaudete village is a steep 5 km from its station. Bikes can be hired at the Subbética cycling centre at Doña Mencía station (km 75).

The best months are March to May and October to November. A popular plan is Jaén to Martos and back (46 km), or one way downhill from Martos to the Guadajoz with a car at the end.
