La Duquesa Golf Country Club

An 18-hole, par-72 Robert Trent Jones Sr course on the El Hacho hillside in Manilva, above Puerto de la Duquesa, with views across the sea to Gibraltar.

About La Duquesa Golf Country Club

La Duquesa Golf & Country Club lies on the hillside of El Hacho in Manilva, above the N-340 at around kilometre 143, at the far western end of the Costa del Sol. The marina of Puerto de la Duquesa and the old fishing hamlet of El Castillo are just below it.

The 18-hole, par-72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr in the mid-1980s and uses the uneven ground of the slope, measuring about 6,060 metres from the white tees. Its two halves play very differently. The front nine is in a more English style, with narrow fairways and raised greens, while the back nine opens up with wider fairways but trickier greens. Hundreds of olive trees line the holes and bunkers crowd the greens. The par-3 17th, played from a high tee with almost no fairway, is the signature hole, and views across the Mediterranean to Gibraltar run through the round.

There is a driving range, practice area and putting green, buggies and trolleys, and a clubhouse with restaurant; a hotel stands beside the 10th.

Spring and autumn are the main seasons. The westerly poniente wind is part of the challenge here, so in summer book an early tee time, before the heat builds.

Nearby places to visit

The closest sand is a short drive downhill: Playa de la Duquesa (600 m), the liveliest beach in Manilva, runs from the marina past the fishing hamlet of El Castillo and its 18th-century coastal fort. Heading south-west, Playa de la Chullera (2 km) is quieter, with sand and shingle on a protected stretch of coast. Beyond it, Playa del Negro (2 km) is a long, natural strand backed by low hills. Pair a morning round with an afternoon on the beach or lunch by the marina.
