Kayaking the Río Piedras at El Rompido

Sheltered tidal paddling in the Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha de El Rompido, between salt-marsh channels and a long sand spit; kayak hire from €12 an hour (2026).

About Kayaking the Río Piedras at El Rompido

The Río Piedras meets the Atlantic between Cartaya and Lepe, but is pushed east by the Flecha de El Rompido, a long spit of dunes and juniper built by the coastal current. River, marsh and spit form the Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha de El Rompido, a protected area of salt marsh, channels (caños) and wild beaches. El Rompido, a fishing village of Cartaya with a lighthouse and marina, faces the spit.

Most trips cross the river to the inner beaches of the Flecha and follow it downstream, or head upriver into the marsh channels at high water, where egrets, spoonbills and ospreys feed. Inside the spit the water is flat and without surf, so it suits beginners and families; at low tide sandbanks appear for landing on empty beaches.

Flecha Extreme hires self-bailing kayaks on El Portil beach, by the Chiringuito KM6, for €12 an hour, €15 for 2 hours or €25 for 4 hours per kayak, life jackets included; dogs are welcome. In El Rompido marina the Escuela Internacional de Vela hires double kayaks, and South Kayak leads guided marsh trips. Ebb currents near the river mouth are strong: check a tide table, stay inside the estuary and never cross the bar to the open sea.

May to October is the main season; spring and autumn bring more birds and fewer boats. Paddle in the morning, before the sea breeze, and keep clear of the summer ferries to the Flecha. Bring water shoes, a hat and 1.5 L of water.
