Playa El Rompido

Playa de El Rompido is the calm village beach of El Rompido in Cartaya, facing the Río Piedras estuary rather than the open Atlantic, sheltered by a 13 km sand spit.

About Playa El Rompido

Playa de El Rompido is the village beach of El Rompido, a fishing village in the municipality of Cartaya, about 8 km south of the town on the Huelva coast. Unusually for the Costa de la Luz, it faces not the open Atlantic but the estuary of the Río Piedras, sheltered by the Flecha de El Rompido, a sand spit about 13 km long parallel to the shore.

The water is calm, and fishing boats still pull up beside the fishing port and marina. The beach is about 1 km of fine, pale sand, and both beach and spit lie within the Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha de El Rompido, protected since 1989. Two lighthouses stand above the village: the original of 1861, now out of use, and a 31-metre tower from 1975.

In summer, boats cross from the village to the Flecha, whose ocean side is the unbuilt beach of Nueva Umbría. The village beach has beach bars, showers and toilets, and there is a large car park.

June and September are the best months, with warm water and fewer people than in July and August. Mornings are quietest on the sand; for the Flecha, take a boat in the afternoon and return at sunset.

Nearby places to visit

Just outside the village, Golf El Rompido (1 km) is the closest course, and Golf Nuevo Portil (4 km) lies a short drive east at Nuevo Portil. Across the Río Piedras, Playa Nueva Umbría (5 km) is the long, unbuilt ocean beach of the Flecha, reached by boat from El Rompido or on foot from La Antilla (5 km), Lepe's main resort beach, with about 3 km of sand and a promenade. Further east towards Punta Umbría, Playa de la Bota (9 km) continues the open Atlantic coast. In summer, the boat from El Rompido is the easiest way onto Nueva Umbría.
