Kayaking at Sancti Petri
Guided and self-guided kayaking from the Sancti Petri marina in Chiclana, along the tidal Caño de Sancti Petri in the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park to the islet castle; from €12 an hour (2026).
About Kayaking at Sancti Petri
The Caño de Sancti Petri is the tidal channel linking the inner Bay of Cádiz with the Atlantic, between San Fernando and Chiclana. Its mouth, at the old tuna-fishing village of Poblado de Sancti Petri, lies in the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park, a landscape of saltmarsh, old salt pans and sand spits. About 2 km offshore stands the Castillo de Sancti Petri, a fort on a rocky islet traditionally linked with the temple of Hercules of Phoenician Gadir.
Trips start at the Puerto Deportivo de Sancti Petri. The classic guided route paddles down the channel to the castle islet and back in 2–2.5 hours. The other favourite heads into the sheltered Caño de Carboneros, about 5 km past the Isla de las Gaviotas, with herons, egrets and waders. Operators use stable sit-on-top kayaks and give a briefing first; no experience is needed.
Novojet hires kayaks from about €12 for one hour and €20 for two (minimum age 7). Sancti-Petri Kayak lists guided castle trips from €18 (children €15), marsh routes from €18, sunset trips from €20 and a 4-hour route at €35 (2025–2026). You must be able to swim; buoyancy aids are provided. Currents are strong in the channel mouth, and levante or poniente wind can make the castle crossing unsafe, so trips may be moved or cancelled.
Main season April to October; in summer paddle in the morning or at sunset. Bring water shoes, a hat, sun cream and a dry bag. Tip: ask about tides when booking and paddle out on the ebb.
