La Trastienda, Granada
Grocery-shop bar near Plaza Nueva that traces its origins to 1836: walk through the old shop counter to a back room serving cured meats, cheese and vermouth.
About La Trastienda, Granada
The business began in 1836 as a grocery called Casa Fernando, first in the Albaicín and later on the Plaza de Cuchilleros. For more than a century it was a shop, and wine came to be served with small bites in the back room. In 1984 the owner's daughter, María Luisa, took over and adopted the name customers already used: La Trastienda, the back shop. In 2018 it won the bars category of the city's Premios Prestigio Turismo. The front still looks like the old grocery, with hams, scales and a marble counter.
It is a cold kitchen with no frying. Order tablas (boards) of jamón de bellota, lomo, chorizo and salchichón ibérico, Granada sausage and queso de cerdo (pork brawn), cheeses, pâtés, mojama (salt-cured tuna) with fried almonds and conservas such as melva and tuna belly. Vermouth and a good wine list go with them, and each drink brings a free tapa.
Opening is Monday to Thursday 19:30–00:00, Friday 19:30–00:30 and Saturday 12:30–16:30 and 19:30–00:30; it is closed on Sundays. Booking is possible online in English. A drink with tapa costs about €3–4 and boards about €12–25 (2026); about €20–30 per person. The back room is small, with a few tables outside in season.
This is an evening bar on weekdays; Saturday lunch is the only daytime session. Arrive at 19:30 to get a seat before the 21:00 rush. Tip: share a mixed board of embutidos and cheese rather than ordering single plates.
