Corral del Carbón
The Corral del Carbón is a 14th-century Nasrid inn and warehouse in central Granada, the only Nasrid alhóndiga preserved complete in Spain, entered through a tall carved horseshoe arch.
About Corral del Carbón
The Corral del Carbón stands on Calle Mariana Pineda, two minutes' walk from the cathedral. It was built in the 14th century as al-Funduq al-Yadida, the 'new inn', where merchants stored and sold goods and lodged upstairs. After 1492 it was used for theatre and later by coal merchants, who gave it its name. It is the only Nasrid alhóndiga preserved in full on the Iberian Peninsula and a national monument since 1918.
The front has a tall horseshoe arch framed by an alfiz, with Arabic inscriptions and a muqarnas vault over the entrance passage. Inside, a square courtyard with a stone basin is ringed by three storeys of galleries on brick pillars. The visit covers the courtyard, entrance hall and an exhibition room.
Entry is free with no booking. The building is also on the Alhambra trust's Andalusí monuments ticket (€8.48), which adds El Bañuelo, Dar al-Horra Palace and the Casa Morisca on Calle Horno de Oro, all free on Sundays. It opens daily 09:00–20:00. The centre is largely pedestrian, so use the public car parks around the old town. Allow 15 to 30 minutes. The courtyard is on one level and easy for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Come early or in the evening for a quiet courtyard, and look up at the muqarnas in the entrance passage. It is a cool stop on hot afternoons.

Towards the Albaicín, El Bañuelo (600 m) is on the same Andalusí monuments ticket, and higher up, Dar al-Horra Palace (750 m) is a late Nasrid palace linked to Aixa, mother of Boabdil. The Monastery of San Jerónimo (750 m) lies to the north-west, its Renaissance church by Diego de Siloé holding the tomb of the Gran Capitán. Plaza Bib-Rambla nearby is a good place for churros.
