Monastery of San Jerónimo

The Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo in central Granada was founded by the Catholic Monarchs and begun in 1504; its Renaissance church by Diego de Siloé holds the tomb of the Gran Capitán.

About Monastery of San Jerónimo

The Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo stands a few minutes' walk west of the cathedral. The Catholic Monarchs founded it at Santa Fe in 1492, and it was rebuilt here from 1504, the first monastery begun in Granada after the conquest. Monks lived here until 1835, when it became a barracks; restored from the 1960s, it has housed Hieronymite nuns since 1977. It was declared a national monument in 1931.

From the entrance courtyard you see the church front carved by Diego de Siloé's team. The Gothic main cloister leads to the refectory, chapter houses and sacristy, which keeps the Niño Jesús de las Batallas linked to the Gran Capitán, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba. The church was built as his pantheon, with Siloé's chancel and a gilded altarpiece of 1570–1605.

Entry costs €8, or €6 for students aged 13 to 25 and visitors with disabilities; under-12s go free and a free app audio guide is included. Buy online or at the door, with no timed slot. In winter it opens Monday to Saturday 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00 and Sunday 11:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00; summer afternoons run 16:00–19:00. Public car parks are nearby. Allow about an hour. The cloister and church are largely level, so access is possible with some limitations.

Mornings are quiet and queues rare. Visits pause during services, and it closes on Good Friday. Dress modestly.

The monastery is a short walk from the heart of the city. Granada Cathedral (600 m) and the Royal Chapel of Granada (600 m), where the Gran Capitán's queen lies buried, stand together on the other side of Gran Vía, with the Corral del Carbón (700 m) nearby. Dar al-Horra Palace (800 m) and El Bañuelo (1 km) are good reasons to climb into the Albaicín, and the Archaeological Museum of Granada (1.1 km) faces the Darro. The Monastery of La Cartuja, Granada (1.5 km) makes a fine Baroque contrast to the north. The streets around San Jerónimo are known for traditional tapas bars.
