El Bañuelo
El Bañuelo is an 11th-century Moorish bathhouse on Granada's Carrera del Darro, one of the best-preserved public baths of al-Andalus, lit through star-shaped openings in its brick vaults.
About El Bañuelo
El Bañuelo, in Arabic the bath of the walnut tree, stands at Carrera del Darro 31 in the Albaicín, on the river Darro opposite the remains of the Cadí bridge. It was built in the 11th century, under the Zirid dynasty, and is one of the oldest and best-preserved Arab public baths in Spain, saved because it later lay inside a private house. A national monument since 1918, it is run by the Alhambra trust.
A small courtyard leads to the rooms in the order bathers used them: changing room, then cold, warm and hot rooms, roofed with brick vaults pierced by star-shaped and octagonal skylights. In the warm room, horseshoe arches rest on columns with capitals reused from Roman, Visigothic and caliphal buildings.
El Bañuelo is on the Andalusí monuments ticket (€8.48), which also covers Dar al-Horra Palace, the Casa Morisca on Calle Horno de Oro and the Corral del Carbón; entry is free for all on Sundays, and no timed booking is needed. From 15 September to 30 April it opens daily 10:00–17:00; from 1 May to 14 September 09:00–14:30 and 17:00–20:30. It is 5 minutes on foot from Plaza Nueva; there is no parking. Allow 20 to 30 minutes. Rooms are small with uneven floors, awkward for wheelchairs, but children enjoy it.
Arrive at opening time to see the shafts of light before the crowds. Sunday's free entry is busier, so go early.
