Bar Aliatar Los Caracoles
Neighbourhood bar on Plaza Aliatar in the upper Albaicín, nicknamed Los Caracoles for its snails in a spiced, peppery broth, served there for decades.
About Bar Aliatar Los Caracoles
Bar Aliatar stands on Plaza Aliatar, near the church of El Salvador in the upper Albaicín, a square that was once a halt for the muleteers who carried goods up the quarter's steep lanes. The bar publishes no founding date, but its own social pages describe four generations of the family behind the counter. Everyone calls it Los Caracoles after its signature tapa. It is simple: a small bar inside and tables across the cobbled square.
The snails are cooked in a spiced, piquant broth to a recipe the kitchen keeps to itself; staff say they get through up to 170 kg on a busy weekend. Other tapas come from the stove: chorizo al infierno (flamed chorizo), choto al estilo campero (kid goat stew), roasted peppers and some fried fish. Raciones of each are available for sharing, and drinks are beer, vermouth and house wine.
Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 13:00–16:00 and 20:00–23:30 and Sunday 13:00–16:00; it is closed on Mondays. A drink with tapa costs about €3–4 and a ración of snails roughly €10–14 (2026); allow €15–25 per person. Cash is the safer option. The square is reached on foot up steep cobbled streets or on the Albaicín minibus.
Snails are a spring and early-summer dish, at their best from April to June. Sunday lunch is the local ritual; arrive by 13:00, as the square fills in the first hour. Tip: combine it with sunset at the San Nicolás viewpoint, ten minutes' walk away.
