Taberna El Gorrión, Jaén
Jaén's oldest tavern, founded in 1888 beside the Arco del Consuelo near the cathedral, with a wooden bar where bills are chalked, aged cheese, cured meats and a 'pardoned' ham on show.
About Taberna El Gorrión, Jaén
José María López Cruz founded the tavern in 1888 by the Arco del Consuelo, a few steps from the cathedral, and it is widely described as the oldest in Jaén. The stained-glass wooden doors, tiled floor, beams and thick wooden counter survive. A ham hangs in a glass case: legend says the founder spared it after a Russian princess rested under it, while the likelier story is that he 'pardoned' it to celebrate the end of the First World War. Juan Eslava Galán mentions it in En busca del unicornio, and it holds a Guía Repsol Solete.
The kitchen is mostly cold: queso añejo (aged cheese), chacinas (cured sausages), paté de perdiz (partridge pâté), pipirrana (a chopped tomato and pepper salad), alcaparrones (caper berries), sangre encebollada, salt cod with radishes and the house tocino. Crushed cornicabra olives come with the first drink, and wine is served by the chato, a small tumbler.
In 2026 it opens only from Friday to Sunday: Friday and Saturday 13:00-16:00 and 20:15-23:30, Sunday lunch 13:00-16:00. Drinks with a tapa cost a few euros and a full round of raciones about €15-25 per person (2026, approximate). The bar takes no bookings; groups should phone (953 23 20 00). Space is tight, with steps at the door.
Arrive at 13:00 on a Saturday, before the lunch crowd. Order a chato with cheese and olives, then pipirrana in summer or partridge pâté in winter. Combine it with La Manchega, a few metres down the lane.
