Bar Santos, Córdoba
Tiny bar opposite the east wall of Córdoba's Mezquita, opened in 1966 by Francisco Santos and famous for its towering tortilla de patatas, eaten standing in the street with a beer.
About Bar Santos, Córdoba
Francisco Santos, born in Santa Cruz in the province of Córdoba, opened the bar in 1966 on Calle Magistral González Francés, opposite the east front of the Mezquita. The tortillas made by his wife, Carmen Serrano, thicker than 15 cm and displayed in the window, became the bar's trademark and drew customers such as Carmen Maura, Francisco Rabal, Boris Yeltsin and Tony Blair. Santos died on Christmas Day 2022 aged 94; in 2020 a court upheld the family's right to the Bar Santos name against an imitator.
The tortilla de patatas, cut into thick wedges and served on a paper plate, is what almost everyone orders, often as a pincho with a caña of beer or a glass of Montilla-Moriles fino. The counter also serves salmorejo, bocadillos (filled rolls), montaditos and cured meats. There is no dining room: people eat at the counter or on the pavement facing the Mezquita wall.
The bar opens daily from about 10:00 until late evening, but hours are not published, so treat them as approximate. A wedge of tortilla costs about €3 and a snack with a drink about €5-8 (2026, approximate); it is best to carry cash. There are no reservations and no tables. It suits a quick stop between monuments.
Go mid-morning or mid-afternoon, before 13:00 or after 15:30, when the counter is quieter. The tortilla is made fresh through the day, so a new one often appears at lunchtime. The street fills when the Mezquita's free early entry ends.
