Bodegas Alvear

Montilla winery founded in 1729 and billed as Andalucía's oldest, where daily guided tours pass through the La Monumental cellar and its soleras of fino, amontillado and Pedro Ximénez.

About Bodegas Alvear

Diego de Alvear y Escalera founded the bodega in Montilla in 1729, and bills itself as Andalucía's oldest winery; the eighth generation of the family runs it today. It lies in the DO Montilla-Moriles, where Pedro Ximénez grows on chalky albariza and makes both dry and sweet wines. Alvear ages its fino (sold as C.B.), amontillado and oloroso in criaderas and soleras, and makes sweet PX from sun-dried grapes.

The tour covers the lagar, the fermentation hall and the ageing cellars, above all La Monumental, the great cask hall. Guides explain ageing under flor and the solera system, then pour three or five wines of your choice, with older bottlings as an option. La Tienda Alvear sells the full range and serves tastings at its wine bar.

Tours run daily at 11:00 and 13:00, plus 16:00 Monday to Saturday, in Spanish and English; allow 1 hour 45 minutes. In 2026 the visit with three wines costs €18 and with five €24; ages 6–17 pay €8, under-6s free. Book online (free cancellation up to four days before). The bodega is in central Montilla, 45 minutes by car from Córdoba; park in nearby streets and pick a driver who skips the tasting.

Montilla's harvest, among the earliest in Spain, starts in August, followed by the Fiesta de la Vendimia. Take home a C.B. fino or an aged PX. Tip: book the 11:00 tour, lunch in town and see a second bodega in the afternoon.
