Bodegas Toro Albalá
Family bodega set up in 1922 inside Aguilar de la Frontera's old power station, known for vintage Pedro Ximénez and a private archaeological museum among the casks.
About Bodegas Toro Albalá
The family made wine from 1844 in an old windmill below Aguilar's castle. In 1922 José María Toro Albalá converted the town's first power station, a 14,000 m² site with underground galleries, into a bodega. From the 1970s Antonio Sánchez built its name on single-vintage wines, above all Don PX from raisined Pedro Ximénez, with finos and amontillados from Sierra de Montilla and Moriles Altos in the DO Montilla-Moriles.
Tours visit the foundational solera, a surface cellar holding 1964 Palo Cortado in casks signed by visitors, and a tasting room with a second-century Bacchus and a large wine library. The private museum mixes Iberian falcatas, Roman coins and lamps with old typewriters. Tastings pair reserve wines with aged vinegars; buy a vintage Don PX.
Visits are by booking, ideally 48 hours ahead. Listed 2026 prices: Ruta Alquimista (1 hour 30 minutes, six tastings) about €20; Ruta Arqueólogo with the museum (2 hours) about €34; the Saturday special about €50; Luxury and Majestic, the latter with a vineyard walk, about €150 and €300. The bodega is on the main avenue into Aguilar, 8 km south of Montilla, with free parking. Agree on a driver before you taste.
The August harvest and the cooler months from October to April suit a visit. Try vintage PX with blue cheese. Tip: choose the Ruta Arqueólogo for proper time in the museum.
