Campiña Sur Cordobesa
Campiña Sur Cordobesa offers a rich blend of historical heritage and natural landscapes that appeal to both tourists and digital nomads seeking a peaceful yet engaging environment.
Why visit Campiña Sur Cordobesa
Campiña Sur Cordobesa stretches across the south-west of Córdoba province, a broad, softly undulating landscape where vineyards share the slopes with olive groves and cereal fields, and the Genil river marks its southern edge. This is wine country above all: Montilla and Moriles give their names to the fortified wines of the Montilla-Moriles designation, aged in cool bodegas much like their cousins from Jerez. Between the vines rise castle-topped towns such as Montemayor and Aguilar de la Frontera, while Puente Genil is the largest centre. It suits travellers who enjoy wine, unhurried village life and a base within easy reach of both Córdoba and Seville.
Main attractions in Campiña Sur Cordobesa
Montilla is the natural starting point, with bodega tours and tastings of fino and Pedro Ximénez, the house where the chronicler known as El Inca Garcilaso lived, and the September wine harvest festival. Aguilar de la Frontera has the elegant octagonal Plaza de San José, Montemayor keeps the castle of Dos Hermanas, and Fernán-Núñez is centred on the palace of its ducal family. Near Puente Genil, the Roman villa of Fuente Álamo displays fine mosaics, and the town’s Semana Santa is famous for its biblical figures. Nature lovers can explore the lagoons of the Zonas Húmedas del Sur de Córdoba, such as Laguna de Zóñar near Aguilar, where birdwatchers look for the rare white-headed duck. Pair it all with salmorejo, local stews and Puente Genil’s quince paste.
