Macharaviaya

Macharaviaya is a white hill village at 236 metres in the Axarquía, a Conjunto Histórico since 1983, rebuilt in the 18th century by the Gálvez family who helped win US independence.

About Macharaviaya

Macharaviaya sits at 236 metres in a ring of hills behind the coast. It began as a Moorish farmstead, the mashar of Abu Yahya. In the 18th century the Gálvez family rose to the top of the Spanish state: José was Minister of the Indies, and Bernardo, later viceroy of New Spain, took Pensacola from the British in 1781. It has been a Conjunto Histórico since 1983; about 520 people live here.

The church of San Jacinto, founded in 1505, was rebuilt by the Gálvez family, and beneath it lies their marble mausoleum of 1785, reached free through the cemetery. The free Museo de los Gálvez, opened in 2005, covers the family's careers in Málaga and America. Walk past the remains of the Real Fábrica de Naipes, a royal playing-card factory that supplied the Americas.

Macharaviaya is 28 km east of Málaga, about 30 minutes via the A-7, the last stretch on a winding country road. Park at the entrance. Allow one to two hours. The compact centre has some slopes but the main street and church are manageable for most, though not fully step-free. It suits history lovers and families.

Spring and autumn are best. Around 4 July the village marks US Independence Day with a re-enactment of the Battle of Pensacola, usually on the nearest Saturday, and San Bernardo is on the first weekend of August. Try gazpachuelo, ajoblanco and sopa de maimones with local moscatel. Check museum hours before you go, as opening days vary.
