Frigiliana

Frigiliana is a whitewashed village 320 metres up on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara, 6 km from Nerja, whose Moorish Barribarto quarter became a Conjunto Histórico in 2014.

About Frigiliana

Frigiliana stands at about 320 metres on a spur of the Sierra de Almijara, looking over terraced mango and avocado groves to the sea at Nerja. The Moors built a castle on the Cerro de Lízar and the steep Barribarto quarter below it. In 1569 Morisco rebels made a last stand on the Peñón de Frigiliana, and the castle was then pulled down. The centre became a Conjunto Histórico in 2014; about 3,400 people live here.

The 17th-century Casa del Apero holds the tourist office and a free archaeological museum. Calle Real passes El Ingenio, a 16th-century mansion that still makes miel de caña, and the church of San Antonio, finished in 1676. Above, the Barribarto climbs in whitewashed stairways, with twelve tile panels telling the story of the 1569 revolt, to the Fuente Vieja and the scant castle walls.

Frigiliana is 59 km east of Málaga, 50 minutes on the A-7 via Nerja, with buses from Nerja Monday to Saturday. The old quarter is pedestrian: use the free car parks at the entrance or the paid one under Plaza de las Tres Culturas. Allow half a day. Cobbles and steps rule out wheelchairs and pushchairs. It suits photographers and walkers.

Spring and autumn are best; summer afternoons are hot and crowded. The Festival Frigiliana 3 Culturas brings concerts and food stalls in late August, and San Antonio is on 13 June. Try aubergines with miel de caña, migas, choto (kid) and sweet moscatel. Arrive before 10:00 to park easily.
