Chiclana de la Frontera
A wine town on the Bay of Cádiz whose coast holds the long La Barrosa beach, Sancti Petri and several golf courses.
Why visit Chiclana de la Frontera
Chiclana grew up as a farming and wine town among salt marshes south of Cádiz, and its old centre still keeps that character. Its coastline is the main attraction: La Barrosa is one of the finest beaches on the Costa de la Luz, around eight kilometres of fine sand backed by pine woods, and at its northern tip the old fishing village of Sancti Petri faces a castle on a rocky islet. It suits families, golfers and travellers who want a relaxed beach base close to Cádiz, Jerez and the white villages.
What to see and do in Chiclana de la Frontera
Spend time on La Barrosa and the quieter Playa del Puerco to the south, both with clear Atlantic water and wide sand. At Sancti Petri, boat trips and kayak outings cross to the islet castle, traditionally linked to an ancient temple of Hercules, and the channel through the salt marshes is good for paddling and birdwatching. Golfers can choose between Campano, La Estancia and Sancti Petri Hills, among others. In town, the Chiclana Museum covers local history and the wine tradition, and small bodegas still make moscatel and fino. Cádiz, Vejer de la Frontera and Conil are all within half an hour.
A day in Chiclana de la Frontera
Spend the morning on La Barrosa beach, then walk north to Sancti Petri for a seafood lunch overlooking the castle islet. In the afternoon, take a boat or kayak across to the castle or play a round of golf. Finish in the old town of Chiclana with a glass of local moscatel.
Food and local life
Chiclana's bodegas pour their own fino and sweet moscatel, often with tapas. Fish from the bay, shellfish from the marshes and fried fish dominate menus, and the beach chiringuitos at La Barrosa are lively in summer. Try local pastries and the fried pork dishes of the inland villages.
