San Bartolo Climbing
Sport and trad climbing on hard sandstone in the Sierra de San Bartolo near Bolonia, Tarifa: some 200–280 routes from 3c to 8a, up to 70–90 m, a 10-minute walk from the car park.
About San Bartolo Climbing
San Bartolo is the main climbing area of the Campo de Gibraltar and one of the best sandstone crags in Andalucía. The rock outcrops on the Sierra de San Bartolo between Bolonia and Tarifa, inside the Parque Natural del Estrecho, with views across the Strait to Morocco. The hard, rough sandstone gives slabs, vertical walls and overhangs climbed on crimps and friction, a contrast with the limestone of most Andalucían crags.
Guides list some 200–280 routes from 3c to 8a, mostly single-pitch sport routes of about 20 m, plus multi-pitch and trad lines up to 70–90 m. The sunny Zona de Arriba (El Cancho, La Habitación, Mariano, Las Placas Grandes) is mostly trad and multi-pitch with some sport routes. The lower Tajo del Búho has five rock groups, including the popular Mosaico, all sport climbing across a wide grade range.
Access is free. Leave the N-340 at about km 72, 11 km from Tarifa, take the road towards Bolonia and the hamlet of Betis, and park at the end of the track by a small football pitch; the rock is 5–10 minutes' walk. Tajo del Búho is closed from 1 March to 31 August for nesting birds. No camping or new bolting. The Strait is often very windy. Pata Negra Surf in Tarifa runs 4-hour guided sessions from €55 with gear (groups of 3–15).
Climbable all year; the upper area suits winter. Bring a 70 m rope, quickdraws, a helmet and cams for trad. Tip: buy the local topo in Tarifa or at the shop by the car park.
