Mercado de Abastos, Tarifa
Tarifa's market is a neo-Mudéjar building of 1927–1928 by architect José Romero Barrero on Calle Colón in the walled old town, with fish stalls and a covered courtyard for breakfast.
About Mercado de Abastos, Tarifa
Tarifa had a market from the 19th century, but by the 1920s its building was in poor repair. The council commissioned architect José Romero Barrero, who directed the works in 1927 and 1928, and the new market opened on 4 August 1928. Its neo-Mudéjar style, with horseshoe arches and lattice screens, recalls the town's Moorish past.
The fish section is well stocked with local species such as voraz (blackspot sea bream) and brótola (forkbeard). Beside it, a covered courtyard with tables, lined by a grocery and a bakery, is where people have breakfast. Since summer 2026 two outlets also open at night, one serving local goat's cheese and hand-carved ham, the other fried fish.
The market opens Monday to Saturday mornings; in summer 2026 the evening service ran Tuesday to Sunday from 20:30 to 00:30. It is a short walk from the Puerta de Jerez gateway; park outside the walls, near the port, and walk in. The courtyard is at street level. It suits families, surfers after breakfast and self-caterers on the coast.
Weekday mornings before 11:00 show the fish counters at their best. Check whether the evening opening continues outside summer before planning a night visit, and bring cash. A coffee and toast in the courtyard is an easy way to watch the market at work.

The market is in the heart of Tarifa's walled old town. Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (200 m), the 10th-century castle above the harbour, is a short walk south-east, and the Puerta de Jerez gate marks the edge of the old town to the north. The causeway to Isla de las Palomas, the southern tip of mainland Europe, starts by the port about 700 m away. Along the coast, the Roman town of Baelo Claudia (17 km) sits above the beach at Bolonia, and the domed Mercado Ingeniero Torroja (19 km) in Algeciras is worth pairing with this market.
