Horse Riding at Bolonia Beach

Guided rides along Bolonia beach, its 30 m dune and the pine woods of the Estrecho Natural Park near Tarifa, beside the Roman town of Baelo Claudia; one-hour rides from about €30 (2026).

About Horse Riding at Bolonia Beach

Bolonia is a bay of white sand almost 4 km long west of Tarifa, inside the Parque Natural del Estrecho. At its western end rises the Duna de Bolonia, a natural monument some 30 m high slowly moving inland over the pines. Behind the beach are umbrella pines, cattle pasture and the Sierra de San Bartolo, and in the middle of the bay stand the ruins of Baelo Claudia, a Roman town built on fish salting.

Stables in El Lentiscal, the hamlet at the eastern end of the bay, run guided rides for all levels. The one-hour ride goes through the pines and along the beach towards the dune; two-hour rides go further into the natural park, and three-hour rides cross the hills to Valdevaqueros. Sunset rides run in summer. Beginners ride at a walk; experienced riders may trot and canter on the sand.

Aventuras del Sur, behind the car park opposite the Sirocco beach bar, lists one-hour rides from €30, two hours from €55 and three hours to Valdevaqueros from €90 (2025–2026); one-hour rides suit children. The Hurricane hotel stables near Tarifa (956 689 092) also run rides. Book ahead in July and August. Helmets are provided; wear long trousers. Strong levante wind can sandblast the beach, so rides may be moved. The main car park is free but fills early in summer.

Best in spring and autumn, or early and late in summer. Tip: ride in the morning, then visit Baelo Claudia, a few minutes' walk away.
