Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno
Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno is Tarifa's 10th-century caliphal castle above the port at Europe's southern tip, with ramparts looking across 14 km of the Strait to the mountains of Morocco.
About Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno
Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, also called the Castillo de Tarifa, was raised in the 10th century under the Caliphate of Córdoba beside the sea, controlling the narrowest crossing between Europe and Africa. Castile took Tarifa in 1292, and in 1294 Alonso Pérez de Guzmán held the castle against a Marinid siege, refusing to surrender even when his captured son was killed. Roman remains have been found inside.
From the entrance you cross the barbican and outer walls to the parade ground, then climb onto the wall-walk linking the square towers and battlements. The views take in the old town, the port with its ferries to Tangier, Tarifa island and, on clear days, the Rif mountains of Morocco.
Admission is €4, €2.50 for ages 12 to 18 and €1.50 for youth-card holders, large families, pensioners and disabled visitors; under-12s and the unemployed go free. Tickets are sold at the gate with no booking. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. The wall-walk has steps and uneven surfaces, so it is less suitable for those with reduced mobility. Old-town parking is scarce.
It opens Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, last entry 15:15, and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. Pick a clear, calm morning for views of Africa; the levante wind can make the ramparts blustery.
