Horse Riding in El Rocío
Guided rides from El Rocío's sand streets onto the edge of Doñana: a 1-hour village ride from €25, 2 hours over the Puente del Ajolí into the Coto del Rey woods for €40, or 3 hours for €60.
About Horse Riding in El Rocío
El Rocío, a village of Almonte on the northern edge of Doñana, is built for horses: sand streets, hitching rails and the white Ermita del Rocío facing the marsh. It hosts the Romería at Pentecost, and every 26 June the marsh mares are driven through the streets in the Saca de las Yeguas. The marsh is part of the Espacio Natural Doñana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with flamingos and spoonbills.
Turismo Ecuestre Doñana, a registered active-tourism firm, rides from stables opposite Calle Santaolalla. The 1-hour Ruta Panorámica (€25) loops the village and marsh front; the 2-hour Experiencia Doñana (€40) crosses the Puente del Ajolí into the Coto del Rey woods; the 2-hour Doñana Sunset (€45) stops for coffee by the marsh; and the 3-hour Territorio Lince (€60) covers lynx habitat. Multi-day rides are also offered.
No experience is needed for short rides, and a €10 introductory session suits nervous beginners. At Matalascañas, 16 km south, Doñana Hípica El Pasodoble, authorised by the Doñana administration, runs 1–2 hour pine and dune rides for €30–40 and beach rides for advanced riders from about €50. Book ahead; during the Romería and the Saca regular rides may not run.
October to May is best, when the marsh holds water and birds; in summer ride early or at sunset to avoid heat and mosquitoes. Wear long trousers and closed shoes. Choose the sunset ride to see the hermitage turn gold over the marsh.
