Playa Bajondillo

Playa de El Bajondillo is the central beach of Torremolinos, below the old town: 1,100 metres of dark sand in the former fishing quarter, with a Blue Flag award.

About Playa Bajondillo

Playa de El Bajondillo is the central beach of Torremolinos, directly below the old town. About 1,100 metres long and 40 metres wide on average, it is a strip of dark sand running from the rocky Punta de Torremolinos, which separates it from La Carihuela, north-east to Playamar. It has held a Blue Flag.

El Bajondillo was the town's fishing quarter, home to only about 60 people in the early 20th century before tourism took over from the 1950s. Its human story is far older: shellfish remains in the nearby Bajondillo cave show Neanderthals eating seafood around 150,000 years ago, among the earliest known evidence of the habit.

From Calle San Miguel, the Cuesta del Tajo, lined with souvenir shops, leads into the quarter, home to the Torre de Pimentel, or Torre de los Molinos. Stairways link the centre with the seafront, and a municipal lift runs all year from Plaza del Panorama to Plaza de los Tajillos. The beach has lifeguards, sunbed hire, showers and toilets, and restaurants serving fried fish.

This is one of the busiest beaches in town. Visit in May, June or September for warm water with more space, and arrive early in the morning, as the rows nearest the sea fill first.
