About Playa de El Cristo

Playa de El Cristo lies about a kilometre west of the marina, on the western side of Estepona. Its western end sits in front of the Seghers residential district that climbs the hill from Avenida del Carmen, which is why some listings call it Playa Seghers; the shore here is sand mixed with pebbles.

Seghers was laid out from the 1970s as a village among pine trees, mixing Mediterranean and Scandinavian architecture, with early apartments by the architect Antonio Lamela. The old Seghers Club hotel once stood on the beach. Today the Lolailo chiringuito serves seafood and paella on the sand, and a cycle path runs along the new promenade into town.

Next door, El Cristo is a recently regenerated cove of sand and gravel about 1.1 km long, sheltered from the wind, with calm water and a small wetland of ornithological interest. It has lifeguards, toilets, showers, sunbed hire and a children's area, has held a Blue Flag, and has a car park and urban buses.

Come in June or September for warm water and space. El Cristo gets crowded on summer weekends, so a weekday morning is quietest; end the day with a drink at the marina at sunset.
