Bar El Estrecho, Marbella
Marbella old town's longest-running bar, opened in 1954 when Isabel and Paco turned the door of their house on narrow Calle San Lázaro into a counter; it still serves a daily stew.
About Bar El Estrecho, Marbella
In 1954 Isabel and Paco opened a door from their home on Calle San Lázaro to the street and set up a counter to sell what they cooked best. It was the first bar in the lane, and barely ten people fitted, so the name El Estrecho (the narrow one) referred to both the alley and the room. They later took in the patio and enlarged the kitchen. Their son Ildefonso, known as Alfonso, who learned to cook from his mother, runs it today.
The menu is Málaga and Andalusian bar food: homemade croquetas, ensaladilla rusa, salmorejo, boquerones en vinagre (anchovies in vinegar), pimientos asados, carne mechada, carrillada (braised pork cheek), fried fish and langostinos al pil pil. Every day there is a plato de cuchara (spoon dish) such as puchero (chickpea and meat stew), lentils or garbanzos de Cuaresma. Most dishes come as a tapa or a ración.
It opens Tuesday to Saturday 12:00–23:00 with food all day, and closes on Sundays and Mondays. Tapas cost €3.50–5 and raciones €10–16.50 (2026); about €20–30 per person. Book online for a table; the counter is first come, first served. The menu is in Spanish and English.
As the kitchen does not close in the afternoon, you can eat at 17:00 when other bars have stopped. Lunch from 14:00 and dinner after 21:00 are busy in summer. Tip: ask for the plato del día before ordering, as it often sells out.

El Estrecho is in the lanes of Marbella's Casco Antiguo, a few steps from Plaza de los Naranjos, with its 16th-century town hall, and Plaza de la Victoria, where the municipal market opened in 1957. The seafront is a short walk south: Playa de la Bajadilla (810 m) by the fishing port, Playa del Cable (1 km) to the west and Playa del Pinillo (2 km) further along the promenade. For a longer beach walk along the paseo marítimo, Playa Casablanca (3 km) has a line of chiringuitos grilling sardine espetos over olive wood.
