Mercado de Salamanca, Málaga

A Neo-Mudéjar market hall in Málaga's El Molinillo district, designed by Daniel Rubio Sánchez and built in 1922–1925, with horseshoe-arched brick entrances and a tiled interior.

About Mercado de Salamanca, Málaga

The Mercado de Salamanca, known locally as the Mercado del Molinillo, stands on Calle San Bartolomé in El Molinillo, just north of Málaga's historic centre. Daniel Rubio Sánchez designed it in the Neo-Mudéjar style and it was built in 1922–1925: a single hall under a metal roof, with identical entrances at each end framed by horseshoe arches of patterned brick and Modernista iron grilles.

Inside, glazed tiles line the walls. About 33 stalls serve the neighbourhood with fruit and vegetables, meat and charcuterie, groceries and a few bars for coffee, beer and a tapa. The building is the main attraction, but it is also handy for picnic food. The hall appears in the 1966 film Lost Command.

Stalls open Monday to Saturday 08:00–15:00; closed Sundays and public holidays. It is 1 km north of Atarazanas and 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral; buses 2, 20 and 36 stop nearby. Allow 20–30 minutes. It suits architecture enthusiasts, photographers and visitors combining it with the museums around Calle Carretería.

Come between 09:00 and 12:00 on a weekday, when stalls are open and the aisles are calm enough to study the tilework; several stalls wind down by early afternoon. Ask before photographing stallholders, and buy something small, such as fruit or a coffee, as a courtesy.
