Mercado de El Carmen, Málaga

A covered market in El Perchel, Málaga's old fishermen's quarter, rebuilt in 2010 on a site trading for over 140 years, with 85 stalls known above all for fresh fish and shellfish.

About Mercado de El Carmen, Málaga

The Mercado de El Carmen stands in El Perchel, west of the Guadalmedina, a district named after the racks (perchas) on which fishermen dried their catch. A market has traded here for more than 140 years; the present hall of about 1,300 square metres is the result of a remodelling completed in 2010 and holds 85 stalls.

Fish is the reason to come: boquerones, sardines, horse mackerel, squid, octopus, prawns and clams, alongside butchers, fruit and vegetables, bakers and ready-made dishes, all priced for local shoppers. Behind the hall, a well-known bar with a large terrace serves fried and grilled fish and shellfish such as clams, coquinas, mussels and conchas finas.

Open Monday to Saturday 08:00–16:00, closed Sundays and public holidays. It is 700 m from Atarazanas across the river and close to María Zambrano station; buses 3, 23, 25 and the airport bus A stop nearby, as does metro line 1. Allow an hour, more with lunch. It suits cooks with a holiday kitchen, families and anyone keen on seafood at local prices.

Come on a weekday morning for the widest choice of fish, or around 13:00 on Saturday for the terrace at its liveliest. Choice at the fish counters is usually smaller on Mondays. Bring cash for small stalls, and use the council's free refrigerated lockers if you shop before heading into town.

Close to the market, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo occupies the former wholesale market on the riverbank. Towards the port, Sea Museum Alborania (1.3 km) on Muelle Uno and Málaga Museum (1.3 km) fill an afternoon after lunch at the market bar, and the Soho district, known for its street art, starts just across the river.
