Alájar

Alájar is a cobbled white village of about 790 people at 574 metres in the Sierra de Aracena, Huelva, a Conjunto Histórico since 1982 beneath the limestone crag of the Peña de Arias Montano.

About Alájar

Alájar lies at 574 metres in a narrow valley in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park, below the Peña de Arias Montano, a limestone and tufa crag. Its name comes from Arabic for 'the stone', and the oldest lanes keep their twisting Islamic plan. A hamlet of Aracena until about 1700, it has been a Conjunto Histórico since 1982 and has about 790 people.

Cobbled lanes run between whitewashed 18th- and 19th-century houses to Plaza de España and the church of San Marcos, whose tower is the village landmark. On the Peña plateau stand the 16th-century Ermita de la Reina de los Ángeles, a Renaissance gateway and a white bell gable on the cliff edge, a free viewpoint; caves below it can be visited on booked tours from €10.

Alájar is about 100 km (1 hour 30 minutes) north-west of Seville and 12 km west of Aracena; buses are few, so drive. Park on the edge of the village: the narrow, sloping cobbled lanes are best on foot and hard for wheelchairs and buggies. Allow two hours, or half a day with the Peña. It suits walkers, photographers and anyone seeking quiet.

Spring and autumn are best; avoid July and August middays. The romería of the Reina de los Ángeles on 6–8 September brings pilgrims from across the sierra to the Peña, and San Bartolomé's romería falls in late August. Try Iberian ham and chacinas, honey, pestiños and tortas de manteca. Tip: climb the old cobbled path to the Peña in the morning.
