Aroche
Aroche is a white hill town of about 3,000 people near the Portuguese border in Huelva's Sierra de Aracena, crowned by a 12th-century Almohad castle with a bullring inside its walls.
About Aroche
Aroche rises on a hill in the far west of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park, close to Portugal, above dehesa. The Romans built Arucci Turobriga on a plain nearby under Augustus; the hilltop castle is Almohad, of the 12th century. Taken by Portugal around 1250, Aroche passed to Castile in 1267. It is a Conjunto Histórico with about 3,000 people.
The rammed-earth castle encloses a bullring of 1802 and the restored Sala del Alcaide. Below, the church of the Asunción, begun in 1483 with masters from Seville Cathedral, was never finished. The Convento de la Cilla houses the archaeological collection and the Museo del Santo Rosario, with rosaries given by popes and kings. Parts of the 17th-century wall survive, and the Roman forum lies by the Ermita de San Mamés.
Aroche is about 130 km (1 hour 45 minutes) north-west of Seville; consortium buses run from Huelva via Cortegana. Park low and walk up: the streets are steep and cobbled, and the castle is unsuitable for wheelchairs. Castle, church and museums are shown on guided visits from the tourist office, about €2 each or €4 combined. Allow half a day.
Spring and autumn are best; summer is hot. The Festival de Diana, a Roman-themed evening at Arucci Turobriga, is held in late July, and the Noche de las Velas lights the old town with thousands of candles in early August. Try Iberian ham, chacinas and game in season. Tip: the tourist office closes on Mondays.

East along the road through the sierra, Cortegana (12 km) is crowned by the Castillo de Cortegana (13 km), a Banda Gallega fortress with a keep of about 1480 and wide views. A little further, Almonaster la Real (17 km) keeps the Mosque of Almonaster la Real (17 km), a 10th-century mosque inside its hilltop castle and free to visit. Around Aroche itself, the Sierra Pelada y Rivera del Aserrador natural area shelters black vultures and black storks, and the Portuguese border is only a short drive to the west.
