Peña de Arias Montano

Peña de Arias Montano is a limestone and tufa crag above Alájar in the Sierra de Aracena, Huelva, with more than 30 caves, a 16th-century hermitage and a view over the south of the province.

About Peña de Arias Montano

The Peña de Arias Montano is a rock outcrop rising above Alájar in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park. Its cliffs are largely tufa, limestone laid down by springs that flow from the rock, and the crag holds more than 30 caves and shelters; in the group called Las Lapas, Bronze Age remains have been found. It is named after Benito Arias Montano, the scholar of Philip II's court who lived here.

On the plateau stand the 16th-century Ermita de la Reina de los Ángeles, a Renaissance gateway and a bell gable flanked by domed turrets on the cliff edge, a viewpoint over Alájar and the hills to the south. A path climbs about 20 minutes to an upper viewpoint. Conditioned caves have recently opened, including the Sima de los Caballos shaft and the Sillita del Rey.

The Peña is reached by road or by a cobbled path from Alájar, and the plateau, hermitage and viewpoints are free. Cave visits must be booked online: from €10, or €8 for children aged 4 to 12 and over-65s, plus €2 at weekends; the Palacio Oscuro cave closes while its bats rest. The plateau suits most visitors, but the caves and upper path involve steps and uneven ground.

Spring and autumn are best, when the chestnut and oak woods are green or turning. The romería of 6 to 8 September draws thousands of pilgrims, so avoid those days unless you want to see it.
