Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla, Carmona
The Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla is the fortified western gate of Carmona, a Carthaginian bastion rebuilt by Romans and Moors, whose tower terrace looks over the old town and plain.
About Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla, Carmona
The Puerta de Sevilla guards the western approach to Carmona, 33 km east of Seville. The Carthaginians turned a pre-Roman tower into a bastion against Rome; under Augustus the Romans added a double gate and a temple whose podium survives, and Caesar called Carmona the strongest city in Baetica. The Moors added Caliphal and Almohad arches. It was protected as a monument in 1906.
Inside, the route passes the lower and upper Salón de los Presos and the Patio de los Aljibes with its cisterns and Roman temple remains, then climbs to the terrace of the Torre del Oro for views over Carmona's rooftops and the plain towards Seville. At street level the double gate shows how attackers were trapped between two arches.
Tickets cost €2, or €1 for students, children and pensioners; residents and under-5s go free, and entry is free for all on Mondays. Buy tickets at the tourist office inside the gate; only groups book. Allow 45 minutes. Stairs lead to the upper rooms and terrace, so there is no wheelchair access beyond the entrance, but children enjoy the walls. Guided town walks start here at 11:00, Wednesday to Sunday.
Published hours are Monday to Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sundays 10:00–15:00, mornings only from June to August; check before travelling. Spring, autumn and late-afternoon light suit the terrace best.
