Cádiz Cathedral

Cádiz Cathedral is the Baroque and neoclassical cathedral on the Atlantic edge of the old town, built over 116 years from 1722 to 1838 and topped by a dome of golden glazed tiles.

About Cádiz Cathedral

Cádiz Cathedral, the Santa Cruz sobre el Mar, stands on the seaward side of the old town, its golden dome visible from almost every roof terrace. Building began in 1722 to plans by Vicente Acero, when Cádiz handled Spain's trade with the Americas, but money ran short and it was only declared finished in 1838, so a Baroque plan ends in neoclassical detail. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural.

A broad nave and ambulatory of pale stone lead to the high altar and the carved choir stalls. Stairs beneath the presbytery descend to the circular crypt, where the composer Manuel de Falla and the writer José María Pemán are buried. The Torre del Reloj gives a 360-degree view over flat roofs and watchtowers, and the ticket also covers the cathedral museum on Plaza Fray Félix.

Admission is €12, €11 for over-65s and €10 for students aged 13 to 25; under-12s go free and an audio guide is included. Tickets are sold at the door or online, with no need to book ahead. Allow about 90 minutes. The church floor is level, but the crypt has stairs and the tower climb suits only those happy with a long ascent.

It opens 10:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday and from 13:30 on Sundays, with last entry at 19:00. Late afternoon light warms the dome as seen from the Campo del Sur promenade. Cover shoulders, and check the website around religious feasts.

Head west along the Campo del Sur and you reach Playa de la Caleta (1 km), the small city beach guarded by Castillo de Santa Catalina, Cádiz (1.2 km) and Castillo de San Sebastián, Cádiz (1.8 km). For a swim closer to the cathedral, Playa Santa María del Mar (900 m) begins on the south side of the old town.
